SILICONE NITRIDE is a chemical compound made of silicon and nitrogen. Its formula is Si3N4. It is a yellowish solid that can be cut or shaped.Type -Si3N4 is stable up to 1400 degree , while type -Si3N4 is above 1400 degree (both types have a hexagonal crystal lattice). It melts at 1900 degree , starts to break down at this temperature, has a density of 3200 kg/m3 and is very hard. Its dielectric constant is between 6.3 and 7.1.

 

 

Si3N4+6NaOH+3H2O=3Na2SiO3+4NH3) to produce hot hydrofluoric acid, which then reacts with ammonium fluorosilicate and silicon tetrafluoride to produce again ammonium fluorosilicate and silicon tetrafluoride:Si3N4+16HF=2(NH4)2[SiF6]+SiF4. C. n. is obtained by exposing silicon powder to nitrogen at a temperature above 1300 degree or as a result of a reaction in the gas phase: 3SiCl 4 + 4NH 3=Si 3 N 4 + 12HCl.C. is used in microelectronics as a dielectric and for the production of heat-resistant nitride ceramics.
